I Am One

by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word

There is a poem that I love and quote often from Edward Everett Hale. It goes like this, "I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything but I can do something. What I can do, I should do, and with the grace of God I will do." The point is that we can do something—and so we ought to do something! Or perhaps you've heard the story of the guy walking along a beach filled with starfish. He sees them drying out and dying in the sun, and so he picks one up and goes to the edge of the water and throws the starfish into the sea. Then, he goes and picks up another dying starfish, walks back to the edge of the crashing waves, and throws it into the water as well. And so on. Another fellow sees him doing this and is unimpressed. "What difference can this make on a beach filled with dying starfish?" he asks himself. Slightly annoyed he goes to the other guy and asks him if he thinks what he is doing will really make any difference. The starfish thrower bends over, picks up a starfish, walks to water's edge and hurls it into the sea and says, "Well, it made a difference for that one!" You can't make a difference for everyone, but you are one, and you can make a difference for someone!

Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life. Phil 2:14-16a ESV
