The Times … and My Temperament

by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word

In the book "Three Religious Rebels" Robert of Tsolme is asked by a friend why he must be so radical, why he must be so extreme in his living of the rule of Benedict. Surely there is an easier way. Surely one mustn't push oneself to the limit. His response is convicting—he simply must live that way, "because of the times", and "because of my temperament". The times he lived in were extreme—and they demanded an extreme response. Do we not also live in extreme times? Do they not also demand of us an extreme response? May we be those upon whom the Lord bestows a temperament corresponding to our times—and may we be as instruments in his hands.

And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Rom 13:11 – 12 NIV
