The Blessing of Family

I believe that, for me, many of life's richest blessings have come to me through my human family. I believe it is no mistake that one of the greatest commandments is to honour father and mother. So much of who we are and who we become is connected with our families—that seedbed of love, of relationships, of self. Family is where we are loved and where we learn to love in return—where we learn life's most important lessons. One important lesson I learned early on in trying to live a dedicated Christian life is that God has a plan not just for individuals, but for families (in fact he has a plan for "a people"). That is to say, when one is called by God and responds to him, it has a designed and subsequent effect on those around him (most immediately his family). As one living single for the Lord, and not having a wife and children of my own (no "family" in that sense), I strongly identify with the words of Henri Dominique Lacordaire, a French priest describing himself with regards to family as being a "member of each, yet belonging to none". With dear extended family, and with dear Christian brothers and sisters throughout the world, "family" continues to be one of life's richest treasures.
