Living Without Walls

by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word

I think it is all too easy for us Christians to put walls between ourselves and others. Yes, we are to be holy and to be set apart—but that doesn't mean we are to be forever constructing dividing walls. Perhaps you are familiar with the fact that in Belfast, N. Ireland there are dozens of "peace walls" (including one 20 foot high underground wall in the city cemetery—presumably keeping peace between the Catholic bones on one side and the Protestant bones on the other!!)—can someone explain this to me please?! Christ came to break down dividing walls of hostility. Christ came to bring peace. I for one want to, as Henri Nouwen puts it, "be a witness to the glimpses of God I have been allowed to catch". I for one hope to spend my remaining days "living without walls".

For he is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. Eph 2:14-16 RSV
